Beretania, Honolulu Hawai'i. Doors open at 2:00 p.m. For the whole family; free to the public. Key Events: Opening and closing invocations from Hawaiian voices, including Kumu John Keola Lake; international delegations from Scotland and Brazil; talks by local authors Jerry Jampolsky, Diane Cirincione and Wally Amos; special presentations about the atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, exactly 60 years ago. Organizers draw insight from Nelson Mandela: "As we let our own light shine, we invite other people to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence liberates others." International Dimension: 300 communities worldwide celebrate Forgiveness Day. The Hawai'i event is one of the largest; other cities include Buenos Aires, London, Paris, Lagos, New York. David Keith of Dumfries, Scotland will bring a fresh account of the recent terrorist events in the UK, and their meaning for the future. Demonstrating practical peacemaking techniques for Unipaz Brazil will be Margarete Birmingham. The American Institute of Massage Therapy (Kailua) will offer a free, specially-created "Forgiveness Massage" throughout the event. The Arts: Performers include members of Hawai'i's top dance troupe, Iona Contemporary Dance Theater, and popular Hawaiian twin sisters Na Hoahanau. 'Olelo Community Television will cover the entire event for later broadcast. The artistic richness of Hawai'i will be celebrated by the Images of Forgiveness and Poetry of Forgiveness Awards. Free copies of the Forgiveness Stories book will be available. Jeff Gere will perform one of his shadow-puppet stories from The Arabian Nights, with original poetry and music.
